About Good Apple

Cooking well, doing good

I started Good Apple Culinary, because I believe everyone — from absolute beginners to experienced hobbyists — can be an amazing cook. Though classes (which I no longer have time to teach!), consulting, food writing and community-based projects, I am passionate about sharing knowledge, skills and confidence in the kitchen.

I’m dedicated to education, partnerships and supporting local farmers and producers, and love making delicious food along the way. Based in the lovely river city of Fredericton, New Brunswick, I’d love to hear from you.

Born in Etobicoke, Ontario, Karen Pinchin spent her childhood selling apples and sweeping, skills that would serve her well later in life. After graduating with an honors degree in journalism and history from Carleton University, she worked as a reporter, writer and editor at The Canadian Press, Maclean’s magazine, the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games, and was the founding editor of OpenFile Vancouver.

In 2012, making a change from hard news to culinary journalism, she enrolled in the Northwest Culinary Academy of Vancouver. With a particular interest in whole-animal butchery, charcuterie, baking and Middle Eastern and French cuisine, she staged in some of Vancouver’s best world-class restaurants. After graduating, Karen spent a summer working in St-Remy-de-Provence, France, where she developed and honed her interests in teaching culinary skills and working with farm-fresh ingredients.

Now a proud resident of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Karen has become part of an amazing network of farmers, culinary entrepreneurs, cooks and food lovers. She’s excited to discover more about what the Maritimes have to offer, whether she’s behind a computer, a notebook, or a stove.
